So-called conversion therapy is a dangerous and discredited practice aimed at changing one’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity/expression.

This dangerous and discredited practice are based on the false claim that being LGBTQ is a mental illness that needs to be cured—a view with no scientific basis.

No young person should ever be shamed by a mental health professional into thinking that who they are is wrong. Mental health professionals should provide care that is ethical and affirming for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young people.

The Ohio Chapter of National Association of Social Workers supports ending this practice, and so does the Ohio Psychological Association (as well as dozens of other mental-health organizations[1]). Cincinnati, Toledo, and Columbus have banned the practice.

These practices are known to be extremely dangerous and can lead to depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse, and even suicide. We can’t allow one more young person to be targeted and hurt by these dangerous and discredited practices.

I live in Athens, and believe that we should protect the children in our community by banning the practice of conversion therapy on minors.
