The movement to save Atewa Forest has got off to a flying start, with two thousand signatures in its first week!
We would like to thank each of you for your early support. But we’ll also be frank: this is a long-haul effort. We at A Rocha have been studying the forest, its wildlife and its human communities for several years now. There are several threats to Atewa, but nothing like bauxite mining – because getting at the bauxite will need removing nearly all of the plant cover. A rainforest ecosystem does not recover from that.
That’s what we’re up against. But if there’s a season of hope, it’s Christmas! So, have a nice one, and we’ll talk again in the New Year. And to remind us all of why we’re doing this, here’s a picture of a Blue-headed Bee-eater, taken in Gola Rainforest, Sierra Leone but also occurring in Atewa (photo: David Monticelli).
From all of us at A Rocha,
Júlio Reis, webmaster, A Rocha International
