The Issue
I have been a teacher at Selbu High School since 2019, a contract which I signed based on the premise that I could use public transportation to get to and from work. The bus used to leave Trondheim at 8:00, stop at Ranheim Fabrikker at 8:30 and I was inside the school building at 10:00 tops. I had time to change clothes, use the restroom, even take a shower if I wanted to, prepare my materials, get the classroom ready, and I could do these things without having to hurry. It takes me 6 minutes to power walk from the bus stop to the actual building. In the winter, I can't walk as fast, I have to stop to remove spikes from my shoes at the entrance, and that takes even more of my available time to get ready for the classroom. This does not only impact me. When I am late, my students have to wait. Classes get delayed. The BUS schedule was much better in 2019 up until they changed it a while ago.
The precious few students who would on occasion take that same bus between Stjørdal and Selbu were never late to class. They were able to stop for a restroom break, talk to their friends, get their books from their lockers and be fully organized before entering the classroom. Now none of this is possible. Some students who commute are impacted negatively because they also have little time before their classes start. This is not just a matter of a teacher who cannot afford a car and is asking for more buses. Although this is one of my reasons for creating the petition, the entire community can benefit from a better public transportation system.
Collective transport is better for the environment and some of us cannot afford anything other than that. ATB needs to either give us a 7:00 AM bus in addition to the one that leaves Stjørdal at 9:35 or readjust the schedule so that the bus can leave Stjørdal at 9:00 like it used to. Selbu High school would get more candidates from Trondheim if they could safely and comfortably commute. There are other advantages to additional buses. Hopefully the community will step up and sign this petition.
