Students are attempting to spread antisemitic incitement at the University of California, Santa Barbara. 

The Associated Students at UCSB are trying to force a vote on a hateful resolution to blacklist Jews and Jewish-owned companies in Israel from doing business with the university. This bill, part of the international Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, will only heighten tensions on campus and contribute to a growing wave of antisemitism on campus and around the country. There has been an extremely alarming increase in antisemitic hate crimes over the last few years and especially in the last couple of weeks. BDS supporters have a long track record of targeting Jews all over the world and projecting onto them any ill feelings they have about Israeli government policies. We have seen violent antisemitism reveal its ugly head in California already last week. Why on Earth would students want to bring this hateful bigotry to UCSB and make Jewish students fear for their safety even more than they are already?

What the Associated Students at UCSB may fail to recognize is that BDS does not only endanger Jewish students on campus, but it imposes a religious test on international trade and investment. How can they justify blacklisting some businesses and not others solely based on the religion of the company’s owner? In any case, Palestinians like me are often the greatest victims, as thousands of us work alongside Jews and rely on paychecks from Israeli companies to support our families.

Now’s the time to tell UCSB: Reject BDS!

The Associated Students have a mission to promote culture and growth opportunities that allow them to serve their community. This resolution goes against that exact goal. BDS works to divide us and discourage dialogue between students who may disagree. It will stifle honest debate and compromise the safety of Jews.
