Petitioning Associate Judge Timothy Steadman

Issue the maximum sentence for both Houstons.

Joseph Mason-Wells, beloved husband, son, brother, and uncle, was just entering his prime when his life was taken from him as a result of reckless actions of two irresponsible and careless individuals who may now walk free.

Imagine sitting on the couch with your significant other, watching a movie in what is perceived to be the safety of your home, when suddenly, there is the sound of glass shattering, and the love of your life is struck in the back of the head by a bullet. That is what happened to Joseph. Those responsible should NOT be allowed to walk free.

Mattisha and Quincy Houston had been drinking alcohol when, at approximately 4 a.m., they decided it would be a good idea to do some target shooting in their backyard. Even though their home was within the city limits of Decatur, they decided to fire Quincy's .45 calibur gun, supposedly aiming at a tree. A bullet fired from that gun entered Joseph's apartment, hit him in the back of the head, causing massive destructive brain trauma which led to his death.

Quincy and Mattisha Houston are each charged with two counts of involunatary manslaughter and one count of reckless discharge of a firearm. Mattisha is scheduled to appear before Associate Judge Timothy Steadman on November 7 for her sentencing hearing. She is facing two to five years in the Illinois Dept. of Corrections or a probation term of 30 months. Quincy's pre-trial is scheduled for November 17. He has not yet entered a plea.

We've been warned by the State's Attorney of the possibility that Mattisha will get probation without a prison sentence. How can a person break so many laws and walk free? How can a person take the life of another through the laws that have been broken, and walk free?

Unfortunately, the other two felony counts were dismissed when Mattisha plead guilty. We need to ensure that she is held accountable and is punished to the fullest extent of the law on the remaining involuntary manslaughter charge.

Please let there be justice served in the killing of Joseph Mason-Wells. Please sign our petition requesting that Mattisha and Quincy Houston be sentenced to the longest maximum prison time allowed by law. No one should be allowed to take another person's life with such reckless abandon and walk free.
