The demonstrations a year ago, which erupted over Mahsa Amini's death and followed with widespread protests, represented one of the largest challenges to the regime in Iran. The subsequent security force crackdowns saw over 500 people killed and more than 22,000 detained.
The protests have found fuel in the widespread economical, social and political crises that the regime has not been able to address. This is why it tries to divert the attention of Iranians to outside the country by blaming west for the riots and engaging in wars outside Iran. Iranians, aware of the regime's tactics, frustrated and angry, have been waiting for an opportunity to show their discontent, and eventually remove this regime which is the root cause of these problems.
The anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death is another opportunity for Iranians for more widespread protests. The threat posed by these protests is existential to the regime. That's why the regime is doing whatever it can to prevent these protests. Recent crackdowns of activists, national minorities, women, university students and academia and relatives of individuals killed or arrested during last year's protests; more security forces on Tehran's streets in recent days, including snap checkpoints for those riding on motorcycles in the country's capital; and internet disruptions are indications of how terrified this regime is of the repeat of last year's protests.
At this point in which the regime is acting out of fear and weakness, it is imperative that Iranians worldwide display their opposition to this brutal regime by participating in widespread protests on September 16th.
