Ask Wonkette to Apologize for Mocking Down Syndrome
Ask Wonkette to Apologize for Mocking Down Syndrome
The Issue
The political blog Wonkette published a post mocking Sarah Palin's son, Trig, who has Down syndrome, on the occasion of his birthday.
The author of the post, Jack Stuef, writes about Trig Palin, "What's he dreaming about? Nothing. He's retarded."
The use of the word "retarded" to describe anybody with Down syndrome is unacceptable, especially by the popular media. It is demeaning. It is offensive. It perpetuates stereotypes about people who have cognitive disbailities.
This is not a political issue. This is an issue of respect. Ask the author of the post, and the publishers of Wonkette, to apologize for using "retarded" to describe a child with Down syndrome.
