Ask USDA Farm Service Agency for Extension : Create Cooperative Farm Village on Pioneering Organic Farm

The Issue

Wayne Talmage pioneered organics in Colorado with his commune friends and a heritage orchard on the North Fork of the Gunnison River.  Sadly, when Wayne arrived "out west," the valley folk sprayed poisons on their beautiful fruit trees, harming themselves, the waterways and the ecosystem.

Now 40 years later through trial and error, the biodiversity on the farm is palpable, as recently described by CSU avian researchers!  Further afield, food awareness is restored to the American people!  The battle is won!  However, not so fast!  At an all time high, the assault on organic production as insufficient to "feed" an expanding population nefariously persists. Misinformation by chemical ag supporters persists and now targets small capably farmers in the developing world.  We must continue on!

Protecting our legacy organic farms is essential!!!

All the same, Wayne is aging beyond his will to farm.  Sad, but very understandable!  Thank you for your years of dedicated effort!  So now, Wayne would like to retire; his children are unable to succeed him.  To sell the farm, he tried a conventional MLS approach and the innovative USDA funded Colorado Land Link program.  Neither worked.

THE PROBLEM:  People who can farm don't have enough money to buy Wayne's farm at its full worth; Wayne can't sell for less because of accrued debt.  People who have the funds, don't have the will or know-how to farm!

THE SOLUTION:  Wayne would like to see The Farm Village Company continue the White Buffalo Farm legacy.

Complicating matters is the fact Wayne was airlifted from the farm after a nearly fatal power take off accident while pruning last March.  Then, a late freeze, El Nino freeze devastated the fruit crop.  Wayne is also facing foreclosure for lots of reasons. He has one more payment to make on a 5 year CH 12 plan.

HELP US NOW!   SIGN THIS LETTER OF SUPPORT!   We have a small window to ensure the best possible outcome:  a farm village built on sound business practice and a cooperative model!  The Farm Village Company grew out of real-time experience at White Buffalo Farm during this crossroads.

The Farm Village Company is the brainchild of many who have come together on White Buffalo Farm, and their off-farm advisors.  The Farm Village team has a sound plan;  we need a little more time to implement.

SUPPORT US IN REQUESTING AN TIME EXTENSION TO TRANSITION OWNERSHIP OF THE FARM!  We are so close!!!

Our goal is payment of past due CH 12 payment by end of year built on agreement to purchase the farm by WBF HOLDINGS.  This holding company is in need of funders and we are very close to getting the word out to the right people!  Our first update in over a year is circulating now!

Please sign this LETTER OF SUPPORT;  encourage FSA staff, trustees, electeds, advocates and others to act on behalf of our future and this incredible agricultural resource!  This farm is the pioneering cornerstone of organics in an flourishing, resurgent farming community!

We need more time to realize the best possible future for this exceptional farmland with 40 year biotic organic soils, no nearby GMO or overspray and first water in the whole valley straight out of snowmelt!  It is a very pure place to support farm education and local economic development through farm livelihoods!

The Farm Village Company buys farmland and converts it into farm-based eco-villages. We match investors with new agrarians. Unlike many eco-villages, a farm eco-village is a place where all residents work on the farm. They either grow food to sell, create products from farm inputs or provide services like farm education or agri-tourism.

Our approach is to identify individuals interested in participating in an  innovative business model that would keep the farm organic and create new value in related areas like service learning, agrotourism and organic artisan goods.  Without an investor putting in money, or even saying that they will put in money in the future, there really is not much we can do if the FSA decides to “swing the hammer” and actually foreclose.

We need TIME TO REACH OUT and obtain a LETTER OF COMMITMENT from hard cash investors ($27k to start!).  We have a 1400 contact email database to which we plan to send this request and build momentum!

SIGN THIS LETTER OF SUPPORT to provide FSA standing in providing an extension to Wayne and time enough for The Farm Village Company to refine its business plan and contract with investors in WBF HOLDINGS, to be formed to purchase White Buffalo Farm!

HELP US ESTABLISH THE FIRST FARM VILLAGE COOPERATIVE AT WHITE BUFFALO!  The village draws on the wisdom and lessons learned as a result of the flourishing of consciousness raising which occurred in the sixties.  We build on the outstanding work of that generation in communications, mediation, collaborative management, computer technology, community outreach, organic product development and more!.

The time is ripe!  The farm's best and highest use is as an cooperative organic farm village.

White Buffalo Farm is an exceptional property, in the heartland of Colorado’s tourism industry with access to wilderness and a quaint small town center.  The farm features senior water rights to some of the cleanest water in the lower 48 states, yet at a latitude and altitude permitting fruit production.  This is at or near the top of the finest quality fruit growing areas in the United States.
