Ask the MTA for a Hunters Point/LIC-Midtown Tunnel Bus

Ask the MTA for a Hunters Point/LIC-Midtown Tunnel Bus
The Issue
UPDATE: Q103 QUEENS-MIDTOWN TUNNEL EXTENSION
An LIC-Midtown Tunnel route was not included in the MTA's final Queens Bus Network Redesign, BUT one of our proposed route ideas, the Q103 Queens-Midtown Tunnel extension, is in the Final Plan Addendum, under consideration for future implementation. This route would connect the Astoria waterfront and Hunters Point/LIC to transit points across the 34th St. corridor (a DOT-proposed busway) in Midtown Manhattan. See our LICBUS route page for a detailed map.

Q103 EXTENSION ROUTE BENEFITS
- Create an ADA-accessible alternative to the 7 train from Hunters Point, one of NYC’s fastest growing neighborhoods, to the center of Manhattan for seniors, people with disabilities and parents with strollers unable to navigate the stairs at Vernon/Jackson station.
- Relieve overcrowding at Vernon/Jackson station.
- Provide backup transit during the 7 line’s frequent shutdowns and delays.
- Provide Astoria waterfront residents with an ADA-accessible direct route to the center of Manhattan. This neighborhood is a transit desert, classified by the MTA as a “Tier 1: Significant Equity Consideration” in their Queens Bus Network Equity Evaluation.
- Provide shift workers at hospitals & other employers on Manhattan’s East Side with public transit to LIC & Astoria, as an alternative to the NYC Ferry, which runs infrequently and not late at night.
- Offset the burden of congestion pricing tolls by offering riders a public transit option through the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.
WHO WE ARE
LICBUS is a volunteer initiative, founded in 2022, to advocate for local MTA bus service connecting Hunters Point/LIC to Manhattan via the Midtown Tunnel. We are grateful for letters of support from NY State Senator Kristen Gonzalez (59th District), NYC Council Member Julie Won (26th District), Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez (NY 7th District) and Laura Rothrock, President, Long Island City Partnership.
