Ask that Weber School District revoke the approval of Turning Point USA's Charters
Ask that Weber School District revoke the approval of Turning Point USA's Charters
The Issue
UPDATE 9/30: Another Turning Point USA group has been established at Westfield High School. On their instagram, they have spread discriminatory rhetoric, including a screenshot of a tweet from their late founder Charlie Kirk, which stated, "Islam is not compatible with western civilization." Despite the Fremont High School chapter stating they are "not political," and "do not endorse any political candidates," their Westfield counterpart has reposted many quotes from an account called Team Trump and had actively made posts criticizing "the left," implying that those with different views are lazy and lesser. Both school groups fall under an organization with the same beliefs. This hate has no place in Weber School District, and the fact that the District and Westfield's administration has allowed another chapter shows a lack of commitment to Weber School Districts' Non-Discrimination policy.
Especially after the recent death of Charlie Kirk, emotions surrounding Turning Point are high. This breeds an environment where many kids do not feel safe because of their beliefs (on both sides). Having such a polarizing organization in our schools is unsafe for all students. Once again, we ask the District to revoke TPUSA's right to have groups in our schools, or at least allow a left-leaning equivalent or GSA. All students deserve to be equally represented, and all students deserve to feel safe being who they are at school.

You may or may not have heard about the Turning Point USA chapter that has recently been established at Fremont High School. This organization is a far-right conservative group focused on pushing their ideas in schools and, quote, “combat(ting) the left”. Their founder is Charlie Kirk, who actively spread discriminatory, homophobic, sexist, white supremacist, and transphobic ideas throughout his career as a far-right talking head. This organization will make many students feel unsafe, both to be themselves and to express their opinions. Having this club at Fremont sets an unhealthy precedent; that Fremont and the District's staff are right leaning, and are willing to favor conservative students over others.
There is no left-leaning equivalent to this organization at our school, and GSAs (Gay-Straight Alliances) are still banned according to WSD Policy 4540. Many students have attempted to make a GSA or related club and have been denied outright. This likely violates the Equal Access Act, a law stating that all school clubs are entitled to equal treatment.
If a chapter of TPUSA is allowed at Fremont, it's likely that one will be allowed at surrounding schools. Weber High School, Westfield, Roy, and Bonneville could have one proposed and accepted as well in the near future. If it's allowed at one school, it could be allowed at all.
Help us show Fremont's administration that students of FHS deserve to have their voices equally represented, and if not, at least have this organization removed from our school, for the comfort and safety of all students.
