Ask Starbucks to reduce plastic by switching to biodegradable or compostable cups
The Issue
Hi! My name is Annalia Tripi. I am 9 years old. I love Starbucks. My favorite drink is the strawberry acai refresher with light ice, lemonade, and no strawberries. I love this drink and have started to get it a lot. Then that’s when I realized: I am getting a chunk of plastic every time I buy Starbucks, I am putting another piece of garbage into the ocean every time I get Starbucks, maybe another animal dies every time I get Starbucks. Did you know that “100 million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone?” (Citation #1) 100,000 marine animals die from getting entangled in plastic yearly – these are just the deaths reported. I do not like this.
I love both animals and Starbucks, but given this situation, I am forced to choose between my favorite drink or protecting the sea creatures I care for. Right now-with this problem-I can’t get both. Unless Starbucks changes this. Starbucks can change the plastic to a biodegradable or compostable product and make a big difference. Furthermore, they could also offer in-store composting for customers who can’t access composting services. Starbucks is a very popular place to get drinks and if their company makes this change, it will make a GINORMOUS difference.
Some more reasons they should make this happen:
My mom doesn't want me to get Starbucks that much because of this problem.
We are trashing the earth and there will be barely anything left for my generation.
7 billion plastic cups are used every year from Starbucks (Citation #2). I see Starbucks is trying, by putting less plastic in their cups, but it's not enough.
