The Issue

Living in the picturesque region of Santa Barbara County, my children and I have always cherished the beautiful outdoors. However, the lack of sidewalks on San Antonio Creek/Via Los Santos Road from Highway 154 down to Old San Marcos poses a significant safety concern for our community. This stretch of road is busy with children riding bikes, dog walkers, runners, and many others trying to safely navigate their daily routines.

Recently, a distressing incident shook our neighborhood—a child, only eight years old, was hit by a car despite both parties following traffic regulations. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for a safe pedestrian pathway. There simply isn't enough secure space for pedestrians and cyclists, making it precarious for anyone who wishes to enjoy this route or even reach their destination safely.

As a parent, it's heart-wrenching to know that my kids can’t safely ride their bikes or walk to their friends’ houses within our own neighborhood. I myself feel unsafe when running or walking my dog. The lack of a designated pathway endangers us, our families, and the countless others who share this concern.

A sidewalk on one side of San Antonio Creek/Via Los Santos Road would not only provide a safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists but also improve the quality of life for everyone in our community. Constructing this sidewalk is vital to prevent further accidents and to ensure peace of mind for all residents.

I urge Santa Barbara County Public Works to prioritize public safety and allocate funds for the construction of a sidewalk along this critical stretch of road. Your support in signing this petition could save lives and make our neighborhood a safer, more connected place for everyone. Please join us in advocating for this crucial improvement by signing this petition today. Together, we can make a difference.
