Ask Pete Wylie for a 2017 remake of 'Imperfect List'.
The Issue
In 1989, with less than a year left of Margaret Thatcher's prime ministership and a working class in ruins, Liverpool's Pete Wylie of the Mighty Wah!, Josie Jones, Michael Clark and Jake Walters came together to create a piece of work whose impact still reverberates in the minds and souls of thankful listeners up and down the country. 'Imperfect List' nailed the spirit of the time, whose residual effects were still being felt throughout the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s, as Jones soberly recounts 64 of the group's least favourite things, from Adolf Hitler, to Stock Aitken and Waterman. With the help of DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall and Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins, the original spoken word track was given the added boost of more anthemic fare - rousing synths and a wailing sax. It hollows you out, leaving you desolate in the face of injustice but reassured of how resilient normal, working class people are and always have been.
Now with democracy and basic human rights in greater jeopardy than at any point in recent memory, we're calling on Pete Wylie and the original line-up to remake 'Imperfect List' for 2017. To create a newly updated anthem for people who are sick from the rise in far-right politics, the unassailable power of Trump, Theresa May's treatment of migrants, The Daily Mail, Murdoch, Steve Bannon, nationalism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, Piers Morgan, Nigel Farage, Breitbart, Kellyanne Conway, the policing by men of women's bodies, Jeremy Clarkson... We could go on.
Josie Jones who's voice you hear in the original version above sadly passed away in 2015. Let this remake be a tribute to her and her memory.
