This petition was started when Petco's recommended minimum betta fish tank size was 1/4 gallon in the "Betta Care Sheet."
Petco raised its suggested minimum from 1/4 gallon to 1 gallon in October 2021.
Petco should raise the recommended minimum tank size from 1 gallon to 5 gallons. PetSmart recommends a minimum of 3 gallons, and many experts advise at least 5 gallons for bettas.
Small aquariums create poor water conditions because they often lack filtration, they can experience greater temperature variation, and there is not enough space create a stimulating environment for fish.
Minimum tank size guidance should take into account the average consumer's maintenance expectations. Many people don't realize that a 1 gallon tank requires more frequent water changes than a 5+ gallon tank.
Larger tanks provide more stable conditions for fish and are easier to maintain!
