An open letter to the Lancaster County Attorney, Pat Condon, from Lancaster County constituents:

We are writing to express our concern about recent and alarming escalations across the country in which election offices have experienced ballot seizures related to contested election results. These incidents threaten the integrity, security, and chain of custody protections that our election systems depend on.

We are asking you to publicly affirm your commitment to Nebraska Revised Statute 32-1032. The law on this matter is clear: ballots must remain in the possession of the county clerk regardless of whether they are the subject of an investigation. This chain-of-custody requirement is not a procedural technicality — it exists to protect the accuracy, auditability, and public trust in our elections. Any deviation from this standard, even in the name of investigating alleged fraud, undermines the very system that allows legitimate concerns to be resolved lawfully and transparently.

As our representative, we ask that you:

1. Publicly affirm your support for Nebraska Revised Statute 32-1032 and the chain-of-custody protections it establishes.
2.  Oppose any effort to authorize the seizure or removal of ballots from county clerk custody outside of the legally established process.
3. Communicate clearly to election officials in our county that ballot custody laws must be upheld regardless of political pressure or investigations.
   
   

Free and fair elections depend on consistent, lawful procedures that are not subject to change based on who is contesting the results. We urge you to take a clear public stand on this issue.
