 Why this issue matters

Meet Roger — a former dog squad member and experienced trainer who works with high-drive dogs and complex behavioural cases.

In the image shared with this petition, Roger is wearing a properly constructed and correctly fitted prong (pinch) collar. There is visible tension — yet he is calm, relaxed, and not in distress.

This tool is not for every dog. Like all training equipment, its use depends on the dog, the behaviour, the handler’s skill, and the training goal.

What’s concerning is that the NSW Government is considering:

  • banning certain training tools outright, and
  • imposing extreme penalties (up to $44,000 fines and 12 months in gaol),
without meaningful consultation with experienced trainers, professional associations, and working-dog organisations who work hands-on with complex cases.

 Our position on animal welfare

We support animal welfare. We support laws that prevent cruelty and hold people accountable for abuse.

What we are asking for is law-making informed by real-world experience and on-the-ground expertise, not blanket bans made without proper consultation.

Misuse causes harm — not the existence of a tool. That’s why the focus should be on education, competency, and enforcement, not banning equipment outright.

By signing and sharing, you’re calling on the NSW Government to:

  • pause any blanket ban on dog training equipment
  • consult properly with on-the-ground experts
  • regulate misuse and abuse — not tools
  • invest in education and accountability
  • prioritise enforcement against genuine cruelty

Animal welfare laws should be balanced, practical, and grounded in real-world knowledge.

Thank you for being part of this.

Let’s get this from 1,000 to 5,000 — together. 💪🐾
