Every year, thousands of perfectly functional IKEA sofas are discarded simply because replacement covers are no longer available. This petition was inspired by my IKEA HAGALUND sofa bed, but it represents owners of many discontinued IKEA sofa models across Europe and beyond.

I am a long-time IKEA customer, having purchased an IKEA HAGALUND sofa bed back in 2008. This sofa has been a staple in my home for almost two decades. Remarkably, the frame and the folding mechanism are still in perfect working condition. The only part that has shown signs of wear over the years is the removable fabric cover, which has understandably seen better days. Sadly, when I attempted to find a replacement cover, I discovered that IKEA no longer offers fabric covers for the HAGALUND or many other discontinued sofa models.

IKEA is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and innovation. By offering modular pieces like those in their sofa collections, they have empowered consumers to adapt and maintain their furniture over the years. Discontinuing replacement covers, however, undermines this sustainable approach. By bringing back these replacement covers, IKEA can continue its legacy of creating long-lasting, sustainable products while minimizing waste and supporting loyal customers who wish to maintain their furniture for as long as possible.

To anyone who's purchased IKEA furniture, you know the joy of being able to modify and maintain your furniture as your needs change. Many fellow IKEA customers share my situation—our sofas are perfectly functional, and our only requirement is a simple new cover. Why discard an entire piece of furniture when a minor update could extend its life by many more years? Let's urge IKEA to rethink their stance and bring back these important accessories.

Plus, in the global context of striving towards sustainability, extending the life of existing furniture is a simple yet effective step. By reinstituting replacement covers for discontinued models, IKEA aligns with the growing consumer demand for sustainable and eco-friendly practices. We are not asking IKEA to keep large stocks of discontinued covers. We are asking IKEA to explore practical solutions such as limited production runs, pre-order campaigns, or made-to-order replacement covers based on customer demand.
