Ask Guthrie Theater to co-produce a youth The Wiz
The Issue
Growing up as a Black youth, I've often felt a lack of representation in the theatrical arts, a space that should be vibrant and welcoming to everyone. As young people, we face a scarcity of opportunities to see ourselves reflected on stage, to tell our stories, and to share the joy that comes from artistic expression. The arts are a powerful medium for connection and understanding, yet diverse narratives often remain untold, leaving many of us longing for a spotlight that truly represents who we are.
The Guthrie Theater, a cornerstone of the Minnesota arts community, has the power to change this narrative. I am calling on the Guthrie Theater to collaborate in co-producing a youth-centered version of "The Wiz," enriched with Afrocentric design and culture, to ignite passion and open doors for young artists of color. "The Wiz" is much more than a remake of a classic; it’s a landmark musical that celebrates black culture and creativity through its vibrant music, rich storytelling, and powerful themes.
Bringing such a production to life is not only a step toward inclusivity, but an invigorating celebration of identity. By embracing an Afrocentric aesthetic, this project honors the diverse roots of our community and plants seeds of confidence and ambition in the hearts of young aspirants.
Bringing 'The Wiz' to the Guthrie would provide invaluable learning experiences both on and off the stage. Young performers could tap into roles that resonate with their cultural identity, while other youth engage behind the scenes in creative and technical roles. Every aspect of this production could engage local artists, educators, and community leaders, creating a rich network of mentorship and partnership.
Empowering youth through theater can forge pathways to a more inclusive future, inspire artistic passion, and enrich the cultural fabric of our communities. Join me in urging the Guthrie Theater to embrace this opportunity for positive change and representation. By signing this petition, you can help us create a space where young voices are celebrated, and where Afrocentric art shines brightly for all.
