My daughter started learning how to play volleyball through the Beaumont Parks and Recreation program. It has been her first time joining an organized group sport, and the experience has been overwhelmingly positive. This program not only allowed her to engage in physical activity but also helped her connect with other girls in our local community, broadening her social circle—which is crucial at her age, especially during middle school years.

The suspension of the youth volleyball program has left a void in the lives of many young participants. For them, volleyball was more than just a game; it was a way to foster teamwork, discipline, and self-confidence. It was a safe environment where they were encouraged to grow and learn skills that extend beyond the court.

Studies have shown that participation in team sports can significantly boost a child's social development and mental well-being. According to a report from the Aspen Institute, children involved in organized sports are more likely to excel academically, have better social interactions, and develop a sense of belonging and identity.

We understand the challenges that come with running community sports programs, especially during uncertain times. However, we believe that with careful planning and the necessary safety protocols, the volleyball program can be resumed in a manner that ensures the well-being of all participants and staff. Rotating practice schedules, enhanced cleaning measures, and regulated team sizes could be implemented to minimize any health risks.

For the sake of our children’s development and happiness, we need these community programs now more than ever. The Beaumont community is home to many eager and passionate young athletes who deserve the chance to play, learn, and grow through organized sports.
