2020 has had innumerable struggles and it's share of victories so far. Regardless of our race, we are a part of them. It's jarring to think that until 1967 in the United States, interracial marriage was seen as illegitimate. Love and unity are principles humans of all kind share, and they will find ways to exist. This happened only three year after Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous, "I have a Dream speech", where Martin Luther King Jr. wishes one day that "little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers." Today, in the information age, there are new ways stay connected, and to express ourselves while enduring the pandemic. My inspiration for this petition was seeing this emoji design called the Secret Handshake. It is a fair hand shaking with a brown hand. It stood out to me because my mom used to always read me, Martin's Big Words: the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Everytime she would read the part about children holding hands, I would yearn for a love separable from race. As the poem urges us towards unity, I say we should commemorate the progress of our voices being heard in unison as brothers and sisters. Finally, I urge Apple and Google to include interracial emoji options such as the Secret Handshake and mixed family emoji options that reflect this precious and challenging year we've spent together.
