Dear Ashfield Councillors,

Tonight there is a motion coming before council with regard to WestConnex. I commend the council in expressing concerns about this wasteful project, which will not solve Sydney's transport problems. A number of Ashfield councillors have in fact already expressed outrage, with the Mayor stating that there is 'no case for this road at all.'

The motions also make reference to the City of Sydney commissioned SGS report "WestConnex Transport Modelling Summary Report" which supports these statements.

Consequently, it would be appropriate to strengthen the wording of the resolutions to be more in line with similar motions which have already been passed by the City of Sydney, Leichhardt and Marrickville councils. These councils also make reference to the SGS report.

The key elements of the motions passed at other councils include:
1. Opposition to the WestConnex project as a whole;
2. A call for an immediate halt to tenders, acquisition and construction until the full business case is released; and
3. A call for a parliamentary enquiry.

This strengthening would serve to build momentum to the campaign against WestConnex and serve as a model to other surrounding councils. Opposition to this project is strong in the Ashfield community and the council should stand united with the residents they represent.
