Hold Asheville, NC Police Department accountable for violating Medical Neutrality.
The Issue
Medical neutrality refers to a principle of noninterference with medical services in times of armed conflict and civil unrest: physicians must be allowed to care for the sick and wounded, and soldiers must receive care regardless of their political affiliations; all parties must refrain from attacking and misusing medical facilities, transport, and personnel. Concepts comprising the principles of medical neutrality derive from international human rights law, medical ethics and humanitarian law. Medical neutrality may be thought of as a kind of social contract that obligates societies to protect medical personnel in both times of war and peace, and obligates medical personnel to treat all individuals regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or political affiliation. Violations of medical neutrality constitute crimes outlined in the Geneva Conventions.
As photographed by citizen times, and reported by USA today¹ as well as many other sources, on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020, officers serving under the Asheville police department have viciously destroyed valuable medical supplies; Water, Tampons, Food items, Face masks for COVID-19. This senseless destruction sought to endanger those peacefully protesting and should be treated like an act of domestic terrorism.
In an interview with USA Today²
"Sean Miller, a UNC Asheville student who is head of communications for the medical team, said the group ensured all volunteers had medical training.
"We had doctors, certified nurses, EMTs and military combat medics, and we also had other people who were CPR and first-aid certified," she said.
She also said they had a verbal agreement with APD to be present, even after curfew.
On Wednesday, the day after police dismantled the medical station, the medics tried to set up again, but were stopped by police."
The fact that a medic station was again blocked by law enforcement shows they do not possess the training or education to fully serve their community.
