Why this petition matters

Buncombe County Commission Chair Brownie Newman confirms that we are little more than two days from losing the opportunity to save our Asheville City Schools at least $1 million annually in utility bills for the next thirty years.
—————
Dear ACS Board of Education members and staff:
Please do not throw away this $1 million per year windfall.
Our community has been working for years to get solar panels on Isaac Dickson Elementary School to save $100,000 per year in today's money. Not funding these panels as designed when the school was built was penny-wise but pound-foolish. Let's not make the same mistake of waiting to act.
THIS BOARD has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save this school district in excess of a million dollars a year (conservatively, in today's dollars) in electricity expenses every year for the next thirty years by putting solar panels on our buildings now.
That money is needed to fund our students' educations.
Current electricity production contaminates our air, water, soil, and climate, disproportionately affecting our most vulnerable citizens.
PLEASE CHANGE COURSE NOW to join the City of Asheville, Buncombe County, A-B Tech, and Buncombe County School in participating in our community's joint utility scale solar project to help us put solar panels on all of our school system buildings.
Please schedule a Special Meeting of the Board of Education so the OCTOBER 9TH deadline does not pass without your participation.
Thank you for all you do for our community.
Yours in service,
