I have contacted Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons asking for them to consider closing on Boxing Day and linking to this petition, here are their responses:

Asda - Asda will not be opening their stores on Boxing Day and recognise that "colleagues deserve time off to spend time with their families." Well done Asda!

Tesco - Very supportive email from a member of the customer service team who is passing it on to the correct department.

Morrisons - No response yet

Sainsburys - "Our customers rely on us to be open on Boxing Day, particularly for fresh food that they have run out of, so we do need to stay open." A disappointing response really as I think very few people believe that customers NEED to buy more food between the 24th - 27th December - I don't know what food is going off/running out in such a short space of time!? However they did say "All Sainsbury’s supermarkets and Argos stores will have reduced hours, from 10am to 5pm."

*****

As much as it is disappointing that not all supermarkets are taking note, especially given how important it will be this year for people to have a good break (whether they are seeing their loved ones or just have a rest after a hectic year), it's encouraging that the trend seems to be moving towards more Supermarkets closing on Boxing Day, and as we often see once a few start doing it the others will hopefully follow.

Thank you to everyone who has signed and supported!

I will keep you updated if I hear from Tesco and Morrisons - but if not best wishes for a safe and relaxing Christmas, Boxing Day and general festive period, whatever and however you celebrate.
