2020 has been an incredibly hard year for all of us, but essential workers have felt this more than most. Through the spring lockdown essential workers continued to do their jobs, in the face of uncertainty and panic, just as they will do again in the England November lockdown and as they have done across various restrictions across the 4 nations.

I am asking supermarkets to remain closed on 26th December 2020 (Boxing day) and to give all of their workers (including cleaners and security staff who may work for an external company or agency) a paid day off in recognition of their hard work this year.

Unfortunately there will be many essential workers who will have to work on Boxing Day, such as those in the health and care sectors, but supermarkets do not need to open and their staff shouldn't have to work.

Supermarket staff this year have had to deal with long queues, stock shortages, abuse from some customers, and additional duties out​side their normal role. They have also been at greater risk of contracting Covid-19 as initially customers weren't required to wear masks. I think in recognition for all their work it is only right that they get to enjoy Christmas with their families for more than just 1 day.
