The Issue

Dear Neighbors and Neighboring Communities,

As concerned residents of the Asbury Park neighborhood in Lithonia, Georgia, we are writing to request the installation of a traffic light at a hazardous intersection near the steep curve within our community.

This area has become increasingly dangerous due to reckless driving, frequent accidents, and pedestrian risks, particularly during peak hours. Our objective is to enhance traffic safety, mitigate accidents, and ensure that our children, seniors, and families can safely traverse our streets.

We, the residents and concerned community members of the Asbury Park neighborhood in Lithonia, Georgia (DeKalb County), urge DeKalb County officials to implement a traffic light at the intersection near the steep curve in our neighborhood.

This area has become a hazardous hotspot due to:

* Reckless speeding through a blind curve
* Frequent accidents involving both vehicles and pedestrians
* Unsafe conditions for children, seniors, and families during peak traffic hours
* Difficulty for residents to safely enter or exit the neighborhood

As our community continues to expand, safety must remain paramount. Installing a traffic signal will substantially reduce the likelihood of accidents and improve traffic flow for all.

As a veteran and homeowner, I am deeply committed to fostering a safer and more harmonious environment for my neighbors. I am eager to contribute to this endeavor and collaborate with local officials to implement this much-needed change to our community.

We respectfully request that the DeKalb County Department of Public Works – Transportation Division take immediate action to assess and install a traffic light at this critical location.

Even renters have a voice in this matter.

Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support and contribute to the protection of our neighborhood.

Responded
Note from Change.org: This response was provided via email to a constituent who sent a message in opposition to the petition. Good morning, I apologize for the delayed response. I am in receipt of your communication. I have read and understand your concerns associated with the traffic light in the Ashbury Park neighborhood. I appreciate you making me aware of your position. As it relates to traffic lights, it is a process. An individual does not get to simply make a request that moves forward. There is a science associated with traffic lights as well as all forms of traffic calming. So, as elected officials and those charged with the responsibility of the care of constituents, we process request, but we do not move blindly. History and data will be reviewed in making a determination as to whether or not the request is in order. Once there has been a review of the request by engineers and traffic experts we will present the proper course of action. So, rest assured we are dealing with a science - this is not an art and no one gets to simply choose what they want. Due to the coast associated with traffic calming and remediation there are strict state guidelines that govern any course of action. -Lorraine Cochran-Johnson
