Radha did not know that she was at risk of cervical cancer.
Radha (name changed), my house help, started to take leaves often. Initially, I didn’t pay much heed taking it to be a normal thing. But then it became a routine. She also looked pale. She said that she often experienced pain in her pelvic area. On being asked if she went to a doctor or not, she told me that a local doctor has given her some "dard ki goli". I immediately took her to a gynaecologist who recommended PAP smear. The PAP smear test came positive but she refused to accept it. Like many other women, she did not even know what cervical cancer is!!
In Indian women, cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer amongst women in the country (breast cancer being the first). It is estimated that about 160 million women between the ages of 30 and 59 years are at risk of developing cervical cancer in India, with 96,922 new cases registered in 2018 alone. Deaths due to cervical cancer in India: 60,078/year (Source: Cancerindia.org.in)
But, Cervical Cancer CAN be Prevented.
There is a vaccine for cervical cancer now available in India. It is curable if detected at an early stage. But women are either unaware or hold themselves back because it requires a pelvic examination. There is a lot of stigma and shame associated with it. Many women haven't even heard the name of this disease. We need to ensure that women of our country know what risks they face!
I have started this petition because a huge part of the problem can be solved simply by spreading awareness.
Mass Awareness by Mohalla Clinics in Delhi
I feel Mohalla clinics in Delhi can be an important point to reach out to people and spread awareness.
Mohalla Clinics are primary health centers located in local neighbourhoods, in the state of New Delhi in India, that offer a basic package of essential health services including medicines, diagnostics, and consultation free of cost.
Mohalla clinics in Delhi are tirelessly serving hundreds of citizens. They can easily be used for spreading awareness and even conducting screening tests.
Please sign my petition asking Mr. Arvind Kejriwal, CM of Delhi, to ensure that the Mohalla clinics do the following:
1) Give out flyers and pamphlets on cervical cancer so that people are aware
2) Hold regular camps in Mohalla clinics for free screening of cervical cancer
Please sign and share this petition so that a curable disease NO LONGER takes lives of women.
