Maintain Public Ownership of the Elliott State Forest

The Issue

We the undersigned urge Oregon state Senator Arnie Roblan, Oregon state Representative Caddy McKeown, and Congressman Peter DeFazio, to act to protect the Common School Fund lands within the Elliott State Forest (ESF) from privatization. The 91,000 acre Elliott State Forest is a treasured public asset. As the largest block of public land in Coos County, the Elliott is a popular place for game and mushroom hunters, anglers, hikers, bird watchers, and many other outdoor enthusiasts. 50% of the ESF is still rare native forest providing unique habitat with innumerable environmental benefits, such as critical spawning habitat for coastal Coho Salmon.  No amount of money can replace the experiences we have on our public land.  Once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.

The State Land Board is attempting to sell the ESF despite state law explicitly forbidding it (ORS 530.450), as well as Oregonians' overwhelming opposition. We believe there are alternatives to the sale and urge you to work toward a solution that maintains public ownership, such as a trust land transfer program.  The Siuslaw National Forest is willing to manage these lands, and this outcome would greatly satisfy outdoorsman and conservationists alike.  Please bring these concerns of your constituents to the State Land Board and work within your offices to implement a solution.
