Aurora Highlands started this petition to Arlington County

Please add your name to support keeping the Heart Field (north softball field) open for casual use and community programming throughout the spring and beyond.

We would like your thoughts and suggestions. So let us know in the comments how you've enjoyed the space recently and what else you'd like to see.

Public health officials agree we will still be needing to practice social distancing this spring. The open space was widely enjoyed last spring and summer for meeting up with friendsplaying gamesexercising, and listening to music. We are hoping to help the community make it through the pandemic by enlivening the space with more seating and more creative programming.

But we also need to get County collaboration. Your support will encourage the County to reschedule games to other available fields. Let's use this opportunity to show how greater flexibility can open up open space opportunities as more and more development comes to our area.

More about our goal
The Aurora Highlands Civic Association seeks to help make our area parks a place for all ages and interests, and expand access to the limited green space in our highly densified community. Through months of COVID restrictions the "Hearts Field" provided the community access to an enlivened open space on a daily basis. The re-imagination of the space has also sparked an opportunity to host activities in celebration of the 2021 National Cherry Blossom Festival.

We seek to understand the scope of the community's support for open space and programming on a daily basis. These insights will be shared with the Arlington County leadership as they determine the level of engagement that they will allocate to the efforts.

Suggestions we've heard from the community thus far include:

  • Drop-in exercise programs (i.e. yoga, Zumba, tai chi and boot camp)
  • Kid-friendly programs (i.e. nature, science, art and exercise)
  • Live music, performances, and trivia nights
  • Food and drink festivals/ beer garden (post COVID)
  • Temporary art installations
  • Outdoor movie nights
  • Holiday celebrations
  • Seating for outdoor dining
  • Adding more moveable chairs, shade, and lawn games to support daily casual use.

What would you like to see? How and when would you use the space? Why is this important to you, your family, and your health?

If you'd like to volunteer for park activities and the festival email the Association at info@aurorahighlands.org

* These can be coordinated with volunteers, Aurora Highlands Civic Association donations, business sponsorships or organizations like the National Landing BID.
All of these activities will be dependent on COVID restrictions and County permissions.

The "hearts field" is located at the corner of 15th St South and Joyce St in Arlington, VA (the northern softball field).
