Dear Supporters,
Today, we passed 350 supporters for the petition to Huffington Post to add a Disability Voices section. Two Fridays ago, I spoke on the phone with Editorial Director Danny Shea, who recognized our petition and spoke of adding a curated disability news and blogs section in the near future. Danny was very accommodating and acknowledged the need for this section; however, he has not followed up to numerous emails asking for a timeline for this section and for a response to our petition. Hopefully he will get back to me soon with good news to share as we continue to push for equal representation and visibility in the media!
I have read every comment on the petition to date, and love hearing from people who share the same concerns about disability representation in the media. While there are many stories of disability discrimination that must be exposed, there are just as many people who have persistently defied outdated disability stereotypes to become exceptional human beings.
I would love to highlight these stories both through Huffington Post and through other initiatives. If you have a story to share, either of prejudice and discrimination due to disability or of an exceptional person with a disability, please email me at sblahovtwitter@gmail.com.
