There have been huge changes recently to Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic as well as its spin-offs, graphic novels and reprints. Many beloved characters that have existed for years have been erased in a reboot. The loss of these characters is having an extremely detrimental impact on the comic and we humbly ask for them to be reversed.

Letter to
Archie Comics Publications
Dear Archie Comics Publications,

We are writing on behalf of fans concerned with the story direction regarding a number of characters of your Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe comic books. While the comic in its current form remains an entertaining read, there are certain original Archie characters whose fates we are nonetheless concerned about.

The Endangered Species arc running in Sonic the Hedgehog issues #243-246 was originally promoted in solicits and cover teases as a return to various echidna-related plot points that had not been addressed in the book for years. This included fan-favorites Lien-Da, Remington, Julie-Su, and the echidna population of Albion. While the first issue of the arc promised an exciting tale exploring the fates of the echidna characters, the following issue crushed those hopes when the echidna population, including the Chaotix’s female membership, were banished and not seen or heard from again. The arc ended on a sour, disappointing note. The echidnas remained lost with no indication that a rescue would come any time soon.

There have been similar changes in Sonic Universe, regarding the fate of the characters King Rob o’ the Hedge, Mari-An, and their son in the arc running alongside Endangered Species: Chaotix Quest. Rob was initially depicted on the cover of Sonic Universe issue #47, while he was nowhere to be seen in the printed version of the arc, instead replaced by Bow Sparrow while Mari-An was replaced by Thorn the Lop. Rob and his family’s absence would be explained early in the arc, but the fact that he was replaced by essentially a proxy character remains a source of concern.

We have also noticed a few alterations and edits in other printed Sonic media that we believe are related to the above changes. The Sonic Super Special Magazine #6 and Sonic Super Digest #2 were said to reprint the Return to Angel Island arc as well as other Chaotix-themed stories. Instead, the magazine focused entirely on the Iron Dominion arc, and even featured edits to the included stories, such as the removal of a page in the Sonic the Hedgehog issue #209 reprint. Meanwhile the digest book reprinted only a few Chaotix-related stories and neglected Julie-Su and Saffron from all included material.

Individually, these changes wouldn’t be very concerning, but combined they don’t paint a good picture. In recent months we’ve seen what appears to be a wholesale removal of a large number of characters and concepts from the Sonic comics, and we fear many more may follow.

We, the undersigned, request that you do whatever is in your power to stop or reverse these detrimental changes to the Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Universe, Sonic Super Special Magazine, and Sonic Super Digest comic books. Beloved characters including Julie-Su, Lien-Da, Remington, Rob o’ the Hedge, and the echidna characters have had their stories cut off abruptly with no resolution or closure in sight. As fans of the comic, we are fearful of the ramifications the loss of these characters will have on the story and lore on the Sonic comics.
