Keep Providence of God Church Open

The Issue

As the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago is evaluating its parishes, we, the parishioners and Alumni of the Providence of God parish would like the Archdiocese to consider keeping our parish open.

The parish was established in 1900 as the second Lithuanian parish in Chicago. The present Romanesque church with twin steeples, designed by Leo Strelka, was dedicated in 1927. Many generations of Lithuanians in the Chicago area went to school there in the 40's, 50's and 60's. Many received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, and even their final mass. To this day, it is a foundation of the Lithuanian community. They fully support the continued operation of their parish.

Beginning about the early 1960s, it has been, and continues to be, the Gateway to mostly Mexican families at the east end of the Pilsen community. The parish is the site of one of the largest passion processions in the city every Easter. The Parish has set up a Go-Fund-Me site for other contributions from Alumni, Parishioners, and supporters. Parishioners have put in $50,000 of their own money to revitalize the building. Bringing more people in from the East Pilsen community.

Historically, Pope John Paul II delivered a short address about the Campaign for Human Development outside this church during his visit here in 1979.

The Providence of God community of all nationalities and generations have devoted their lives to our Parish for over a century. It would be a sad day for all if this Parish were to be closed.
