Help save Keezhadi Sangam Era Excavation artifacts, construct a field museum at Keezhadi!

The Issue

The excavations concluded this September in Keezhadi of Sivagangai District have revealed a well planned city running to about 110 acres of area along the Vaigai riverbed. Only 50 cents of this area has been excavated so far that has produced settlements, jewellery, fine game stones, semi-precious stones and a dozen Tamil Brahmi inscriptions. Beads of agate, carnelian and quarts excavated here indicate the Sangam Tamils had trade links with countries like Rome. Pottery, bone tools and iron weapons belonging to 3rd century BC, i.e., 2500 years ago (ascertained through comparative dating) have been excavated here. A labyrinth of brick walls, canals, proper drainage system and a purported factory has been discovered at Keezhadi.

Keezhadi site is the key to understanding the Vaigai Valley Civilisation and is a major archaeological find of this century. It is now learned that the excavated materials are going to be shifted to ASI's Mysuru office. It is doubtful if the delicate potteries and jewellery would reach Mysuru safe. If a FIELD MUSEUM is constructed at the excavation site or within Keezhadi village, which the Central Government is ready to organize, the State Government has to accede permission and provide 2 acres of land for construction of the field museum.

It is imperative  to save what little history is left to us and Keezhadi is the key to understanding the Sangam Tamil era. History is not what we learn in texts alone. It is what we preserve for our future generations to understand and cherish. This petition is hereby lodged in all humility to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu- Madam J. Jayalalita, the Archaeological Survey of India, the Central Government and the District Collector, Sivagangai for kind action.
