ARAVALLI: THE LIFELINE OF RAJASTHAN AND THE WHOLE NATION

The Aravalli has seen the world for nearly two billion years, watching the world build and crumble, grow and decay. With time it has now become unaware for it doesn’t know what danger falls upon it, it doesn’t understand that its death order has been written.

 

 

 

 

 

As a Rajasthani, and having felt the presence of the great Aravalli, it is impossible to not stand up for our good old friend. These are not just hills but a backdrop to our lives, rather it has funded many childhoods, including mine. It shatters me that approximately 90% of its pristine landscape is endangered by the very own government which had sworn to protect it.

 

“What has actually happened? Why are the people frenzied?”

November 2025, the SC of India redefined Aravalli. According to the Supreme Court , any Aravalli hill under the height of a 100 meters would not be legally treated as a part of Aravalli.  

 

 

 

 

 

By redefining what counts as “Aravalli” (using height, records). Some areas that are geologically Aravalli may no longer be legally Aravalli. Once an area is outside the legal definition, mining, quarrying, and construction become possible under state permissions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Some of you at this point might question, “what’s wrong with it?”. Let me tell you that the Aravallis cover a total area of about 690 kilometres with 12,000 hills and 11,000 (approximate values) of these very hills are below the height of a 100 meters. It means that it is now possible for the government to mine such hills for ‘development’, ‘infrastructure’, etc.

 

We must understand, Aravallis are mountains, not roads, which once eroded could be rebuilt. They are our culture, heritage  and history.

“Why should we save these hills? What do they do for us?” 

The Aravalli hills act as a natural barrier to prevent an ecological collapse.

• It stops the Thar desert to advance anymore from Jaisalmer. 

• If the Aravalli is cut, Delhi would suffer chronic pollution.

• Aravalli acts as a barrier without which we (north India especially) would have more erratic rainfall and flash floods.

• Farmers would experience unemployment as our land would lose its fertility.

• Animal species which reside in the Aravalli would perish.

 "The Aravalli range stands as a wall between the Thar Desert and the rest of Northwest India. If you remove the Aravalli, this entire area becomes a desert. What does that mean? Your food security, water security are directly threatened. Millions of people's lives are affected." - Activist Neelam Ahluwalia. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Personal view 

I am a living resident of Rajasthan and a passionate youngster and ever since childhood Aravalli has mattered to me for it stood tall all the time. Once as a child I thought it engulfed the sun! And if ever in my lifetime I see it getting destroyed I would disintegrate into fragments. I want the great Aravalli to be a part of someone else's childhood too, I want the baby animals living there to mature and rest peacefully and I want the government to feel that their power could be checked by us, the citizens for this great nation, INDIA.

अरावली: राजस्थान और पूरे राष्ट्र की जीवनरेखा |

अरावली ने लगभग दो अरब वर्षों तक इस संसार को देखा है—उसे बनते-बिगड़ते, बढ़ते-घटते देखा है। समय के साथ अब वह अनभिज्ञ-सी हो गई है, क्योंकि उसे यह आभास नहीं है कि उस पर कैसा संकट मंडरा रहा है, उसे यह नहीं पता कि उसके विनाश का आदेश लिख दिया गया है।

 

 

 

 

 

 

एक राजस्थानी होने के नाते, और महान अरावली की उपस्थिति को महसूस करने के बाद, उसके लिए खड़ा न होना असंभव है। ये केवल पहाड़ियाँ नहीं हैं, बल्कि हमारे जीवन की पृष्ठभूमि हैं; इन्होंने मेरी सहित अनगिनत बचपन की यादों को संजोया है। यह सोचकर मन टूट जाता है कि इसकी लगभग 90% निर्मल भूमि उसी सरकार द्वारा खतरे में डाली जा रही है, जिसने इसकी रक्षा की शपथ ली थी।

 

 

“आख़िर हुआ क्या है? लोग इतने व्याकुल क्यों हैं?”

नवंबर 2025 में, भारत के सर्वोच्च न्यायालय ने अरावली की परिभाषा को पुनः निर्धारित किया। सर्वोच्च न्यायालय के अनुसार, 100 मीटर से कम ऊँचाई वाली किसी भी अरावली पहाड़ी को कानूनी रूप से अरावली का हिस्सा नहीं माना जाएगा।

 

 

 

 

 

“अरावली” की परिभाषा को (ऊँचाई, अभिलेखों के आधार पर) बदलकर, कुछ ऐसे क्षेत्र जो भूवैज्ञानिक रूप से अरावली हैं, अब कानूनी रूप से अरावली नहीं रह गए। एक बार कोई क्षेत्र कानूनी परिभाषा से बाहर हो जाता है, तो राज्य की अनुमति के तहत वहाँ खनन, पत्थर-खदान और निर्माण संभव हो जाता है।

 

 

 

 

 

इस बिंदु पर कुछ लोग पूछ सकते हैं, “इसमें ग़लत क्या है?” आपको बता दूँ कि अरावली पर्वतमाला लगभग 690 किलोमीटर में फैली है, जिसमें करीब 12,000 पहाड़ियाँ हैं, और इनमें से लगभग 11,000 पहाड़ियाँ 100 मीटर से कम ऊँचाई की हैं। इसका अर्थ यह है कि अब सरकार के लिए ‘विकास’, ‘अवसंरचना’ आदि के नाम पर इन पहाड़ियों का खनन संभव हो गया है। 

हमें समझना होगा कि अरावली सड़कें नहीं हैं जिन्हें घिसने के बाद फिर से बनाया जा सके। ये हमारी संस्कृति, विरासत और इतिहास हैं।

 

 

 

“हमें इन पहाड़ियों को क्यों बचाना चाहिए? ये हमारे लिए क्या करती हैं?”

अरावली पहाड़ियाँ पारिस्थितिक पतन को रोकने के लिए एक प्राकृतिक ढाल का काम करती हैं।

• यह थार मरुस्थल को जैसलमेर से आगे बढ़ने से रोकती हैं।

• यदि अरावली काट दी गई, तो दिल्ली को दीर्घकालिक प्रदूषण का सामना करना पड़ेगा।

• अरावली एक अवरोधक है; इसके बिना (विशेषकर उत्तर भारत में) वर्षा और अधिक अनियमित होगी और अचानक बाढ़ें आएँगी।

• किसानों को बेरोज़गारी झेलनी पड़ेगी क्योंकि भूमि की उर्वरता नष्ट हो जाएगी।

• अरावली में रहने वाली पशु-प्रजातियाँ नष्ट हो जाएँगी।

“अरावली पर्वतमाला थार मरुस्थल और उत्तर-पश्चिम भारत के शेष भाग के बीच एक दीवार की तरह खड़ी है। यदि आप अरावली को हटा देते हैं, तो यह पूरा क्षेत्र मरुस्थल बन जाएगा। इसका क्या अर्थ है? आपकी खाद्य सुरक्षा और जल सुरक्षा सीधे तौर पर खतरे में पड़ जाती है। करोड़ों लोगों का जीवन प्रभावित होता है।”

व्यक्तिगत दृष्टिकोण :

मैं राजस्थान की निवासी हूँ और एक जागरूक, उत्साही युवती भी। बचपन से ही अरावली मेरे लिए मायने रखती आई है—वह हर समय अडिग खड़ी रही। कभी बचपन में मुझे लगता था कि वह सूरज को भी अपने भीतर समेट लेती है! और यदि अपने जीवनकाल में मैं उसे नष्ट होते देखूँ, तो मैं बिखर जाऊँगी। मैं चाहती हूँ कि महान अरावली किसी और के बचपन का भी हिस्सा बने, वहाँ रहने वाले नन्हे पशु-पक्षी बड़े हों और शांति से विश्राम करें, और सरकार यह महसूस करे कि इस महान राष्ट्र, भारत, में उसकी शक्ति पर हम—नागरिक—निगरानी रख सकते हैं।
