Friends of Animals - ASU started this petition to Aramark and

Chickens deserve respect. They do not deserve to be beaten, maimed, scalded alive, or sliced open while conscious (Mercy for Animals). Chickens deserve to live outside windowless sheds. They also deserve to live in natural bodies, not in bodies bred to grow so quickly that they are unable to stand (Lange, 2017). They deserve to not have toxic substances and banned drugs like Chloramphenicol forced upon them (Peachman, 2018). Chickens deserve to be fed the healthy grains and nutrients they need rather than being forced to eat waste and pieces of other animals (Peachman, 2018). Chick-Fil-A must be replaced on all ASU campuses because of this animal abuse; we do not want such a company associated with our university!

Chick-Fil-A’s affordability is because they treat chickens like trash—through controlled breeding they have modified chickens into the modern gallus gallus domesticus: a sad, obese version of its once noble galliform ancestors (GIS Database, 2010). The exploitative farming practices Chick-Fil-A uses also cause all sorts of environmental problems like deforestation: vast swathes of Amazon forest are being cleared to grow feed for chickens (Dalton, 2020). Worldwide, humans slaughter 66.5 billion “broiler chickens” annually (FAO, 2017). Humanity slaughters so many chickens, year after year, that chicken bones in landfills, geologists explain, have now altered Earth’s geological record (Bennett et. al, 2018).

Additionally, Chick-Fil-A’s “food” is a direct threat to the health and wellbeing of the ASU community because their main dish, fried chicken, has been shown to increase ALL CAUSE mortality according to a recent British Medical Journal (BMJ) study (Sun et al, 2019). The study shows that eating deep-fried chicken can greatly reduce life span. Over 15 years since “Super-Size Me” (2004) was released, there is no evidence-based reason an educational community should be consuming “fast food”—we ought to know better!

We have appealed for over 6 months to manager Jim Emmons, ARAMARK staff, and school officials, but have been met with stonewalling and silence. We are now appealing to administrators, deans, student government, and even President Crow to intervene. 24 Carrots (a local vegan restaurant run by ASU alumni) has agreed to replace Chick-Fil-A with a high-volume “quick-service” version of their popular Tempe restaurant that serves affordable, healthy, vegan food. They are enthusiastic and would love an audience with Aramark and Dr. Crow!

In summary, Chick-Fil-A abuses chickens. Chick-Fil-A’s “food” is a threat to the health and wellness of the ASU community. Additionally, their business practices are damaging the environment. Please sign this petition to replace them with a local, healthy, ASU alumni-run restaurant!
