Wesley International Academy is a high-achieving, racially, ethnically, and economically diverse Title I public charter school in the Atlanta Public School System (APS). Wesley offers a unique educational choice for APS students: K-8, International Baccalaureate (I.B.) at Primary and Middle Years, daily Mandarin Chinese in K-8, and single gender classrooms. Wesley is citywide but most Wesley students reside in the Jackson cluster, where Wesley is an engaged and active participant, adding to the emerging I.B. focus in the Jackson cluster.
According to Superintendent Davis, the "sole purpose" of closing Cook Elementary and other schools was the "improvement of the education delivered to students every day." Wesley pays $875,000.00 in rent to a real estate company in Virginia. If Wesley moves to a closed school, this $875,000.00 can improve education for APS students who attend Wesley rather than going to a real estate company in Virginia.
APS picked Cook as the site for offices and a teacher training program because it is close to GSU. But APS also closed two other schools within three miles of GSU, and APS owns two abandoned buildings within one mile of GSU.
Cook is the only option that meets Wesley's needs. Cook adjoins residential communities where children need a building to hold a thriving school. Former Cook students can attend at Wesley. Put the teacher training at one of the other four APS-owned facilities near GSU. Continue the 122 year tradition of an APS school on the corner of Memorial and Kelly. Bring Wesley to Cook.
