Approve the Tonkin 10/10 Bill a long overdue step toward real accessibility and inclusion
The issue
The proposed Tonkin’s 10/10 Law seeks to finally address this by setting national standards to enforce accessibility, uphold human rights, and ensure equity—by law and remove tokenism in the sector, labelled as reasonable allowances. Link to Bill
The reality for over 5.5 million Australians, or 1 in every 5 people, is that their desire to access the community, is hindered by barriers that others might not notice.
- Why is everything so much harder if you have a disability?
Why is it called the 10/10 Bill? Well it adds up to 20 which closely represents the 21% of the Australian population with a disability (ABS, 2025).
The Bill will aim to increase access to the community for 20% of the population through legislative change:
- More 20% accessible seating at public and private venues and guess what, with flexible seating you could also sit with your friends and family which in many venues is not an option!
- A minimum of 20% accessible transport options across the transport sector, public and private. Have you not been able to get home from a venue? This will solve that issue.
- More public toilets and by splitting the sector into 10% mobile and 10% wheelchair disabilities, more options are available. Check out the new graphic in the Bill.
- Car parks - more carparks too and these would ensure there would be a minimum of 10% for wheelchair parks and 10% for mobile disabilities.
- Imagine a life of buying a ticket online like everyone, to an event. We would ensure it was legislated that ticket purchases for mobile and wheelchair access seats would be online!
This Bill will increase accessibility for all to the community. A real disruption, where accessing the community is a human right. Often tokenistic gestures are labelled as reasonable allowances. Support our Bill today, and you can help us voice that these changes are critical as a basic human right.
Join us in urging our law makers to pass this Bill and create a more equitable and accessible Australia for everyone.
We call for your support in bringing this essential change to fruition. Sign the petition to approve the Tonkin 10/10 Bill and help create an inclusive future for all Australians.
