Implement mandatory preventive sexual assault education for the American University community, and the other recommendations of the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Task Force

The Issue

In the wake of leaked communications from the former fraternity Epsilon Iota, it is clear that substantive steps must be taken to shape a culture of safety and support at American University. The Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Task Force, comprised of students, faculty, and staff, offered simple, achievable recommendations on how to move forward with the prevention of sexual violence at AU. Months later, the university administration has shown no indication of change. We, the students, must call on them to fight, proactively, to secure a safe, healthy environment for their students.

Please, only sign this petition if you are an AU student, faculty, staff, or alum.

We the undersigned, the Students Against Sexual Violence, demand that the administration of the American University enact the policy recommendations outlined by the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Task Force as commissioned by Student Government. These include:

The creation of a centralized Sexual Assault Response & Prevention Program center and office to be coordinated by the Sexual Assault Prevention Coordinator and the Coordinator of Victim Advocacy Services.
The implementation of mandatory  preventive  sexual  assault  education for the university community.
The education of students on the topic of sexual assault prevention, beginning with freshmen and continuing with reinforced education throughout their careers at American University.
Two  hours  to  be  dedicated  during  Welcome  Week  to  peer facilitated,  in-person  sexual  assault  education  for  all  first year  students  with  an  implied mandate.
The  incorporation  of  Title  IX  language  and  survivor  resources  into  all  syllabi  at  American University.

We demand action from the administration of American University in response to this petition, with detailed and informative updates about these actions, by the Fifteenth of April, 2015. Failure to take action on these demands will be met with direct action.

Sincerely,

The Students Against Sexual Violence

American University
