The George Snyder Trail (GST) was approved this summer. The bids then went out, but the lowest bid was $4.6M over the available funds granted to the City of Fairfax from the I-66 concessionaire money. The city has applied for those additional funds. So far VDOT has approved that application, and at its December 10 meeting the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) must give the final approval.
On Tuesday December 9 city council will need to approve the introduction of a supplemental appropriation resolution to accept the additional funding. At a public hearing on January 13 the council must vote their approval of that resolution. That is, they must vote to accept the money. Those members of the council who were opposed to the trail may vote against the funding resolution, which would put building the trail at risk and require the city to pay back $3.7M!!
We ask that you write to city council right away to urge their approval of the introduction of the resolution so that the public hearing can be scheduled. MayorandCouncil@fairfaxva.gov You may simply say that you want the council to accept the additional money from VDOT.
