The Issue

My son's hockey team has achieved something truly remarkable—they've won states and now have the opportunity to compete in Nationals in Irvine, California. This is an incredible achievement for him and his team, a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion for hockey. However, we're facing a hurdle that I believe is unjust.

Unlike other students who play school sports, my son is part of a team outside the school because Altoona does not offer Hockey. This should not diminish his accomplishment or limit his opportunities. If it were a school sport, there wouldn't be any issue with his temporary absence. I find it unfair that my son cannot automatically get permission for a temporary absence to participate in a sport he excels at, just because it's not available at his school.

It's important to note that my son currently has no missing assignments, and his lowest grade is a 94. He has consistently been on the honor roll every marking period, proving his commitment to academics. While he does have a record of missed days, all are excused, with only two requiring my initiation. The rest were doctor-excused.

Allowing my son to participate will not only be a rewarding experience for him but will also set a precedent for other students pursuing their passions through non-school sports. Approving his temporary absence can show support for students who strive for excellence both in and out of the classroom.

I call upon the school administration to consider students who pursue sports that the school does not offer and grant them the same opportunities as those playing school sports. Let's not penalize students for circumstances beyond their control. Please sign this petition to approve my son's request for a temporary absence so he can proudly represent our community at the Nationals. Your support can make a world of difference.
