Appoint a Special Prosecutor(s) for Police Misconduct

The Issue

The demand for justice in cases of police misconduct has never been more urgent. Across the United States, countless victims of police abuse and their families are yearning for justice. However, the process of holding law enforcement accountable is often hindered by conflicts of interest within the judicial system. Giving the responsibility of prosecuting police misconduct cases to a standard Prosecutor within the same jurisdiction can lead to a lack of transparency.

In Columbia, SC, the citizens demand change. To ensure fair investigations and unbiased trial proceedings, a Special Prosecutor(s) should be appointed for handling cases of police misconduct. This will not only remove conflicting interests but also ensure that justice is served without bias.

In a study conducted by Philip Stinson, a criminologist at Bowling Green State University, among thousands of fatal shootings by police since 2005, only 104 officers were charged and just 35 convicted. These statistics shed light on the lack of accountability in cases of police misconduct (source: The Washington Post).

By advocating for a Special Prosecutor(s), we expect to increase transparency within the judicial process, improve police accountability, and ultimately, serve justice for the victims.

Join us in calling on the State Legislature of South Carolina to appoint a Special Prosecutor(s) specifically designated for police misconduct cases in Columbia, SC. Together, we can promote fair judiciary procedures and trust within our community. Please sign this petition.
