Petition for Applied Music for High School Program

  • Advantages of the Program

The student’s transcript carries credit for Applied Music (through ELO: Extended Learning Opportunity granted by Idaho State Legislature Title 33 Education Chapter 64, 33-6402) which is an asset to student academia and when universities are considering applicants and weighing his or her abilities.

Teachers can be assured of a more consistent year-round program since a weekly lesson during the school term, but outside of school hours, is required. Practice requirements are set to meet state standards.

Students have tangible goals in the requirements prescribed by North Idaho Music Teachers Association (explained below in Required Performance Repertoire and Music Theory Exams) and may receive credit as an elective/independent study and as given by school as: letter grade, pass/fail, or .5 - 2 credits.

Parents have the assurance that the student is being guided through a course of study designed and approved to meet the developmental needs of students at any level of study.

It is designed to be beyond supplemental to a school's music program as it is individual/private/one-on-one, and assists students to understand further from in classroom music/band/choir.

  • Teacher Credentials

Only North Idaho Music Teachers Association members holding current certification status of NCTM (Nationally Certified Teacher of Music) are permitted to teach Applied Music for Credit in any high school. This certification is a rigorous program put on by Music Teachers National Association that teachers complete and is annually reassessed by MTNA and can be verified at MTNA.org. The purpose of teacher certification is to recognize professional and pedagogical competence within the membership of the North Idaho Music Teachers Association. Certification promotes the highest standards of music teaching through continuing educational advancement and self-assessment.

  • Required Performance Repertoire Exams and Music Theory Exams

In a year, a student must study a balanced program of literature from each of the four periods of music: Baroque, Classical, Romantic/ Impressionistic, and Contemporary. The teacher is responsible for choosing material that fits the student’s level of advancement. Students are then required to enter North Idaho Music Teachers Association Performance Festival that is judged by highly esteemed outside professors. They must perform two memorized pieces from two of the four periods of music for adjudicator at Performance Festival and is usually held in April.

Additional study is required in Music Theory. The student is required to enroll in Musicianship Festival that test in the following areas: ear training, form and analysis, improvisation, music history, sight-reading, technical exercises and etudes, terms and signs, transposition, and written theory usually held in November.

  • Evaluation

Evaluations are based on study over the period of each semester or grading period.  The teacher and student set goals in repertoire, technique, theory and other areas listed under Required Performance Repertoire and Music Theory Exams.  The teacher determines how and when the evaluation will be given.

  • Procedure

The student fills out the Request for Credit form provided by North Idaho Music Teachers Association or by the school district, available at the school office.

Each school determines the unit of credit to be given.  The standard unit of credit for Applied Music is the same as for any elective/independent study course.

The North Idaho Music Teachers Association member who hold Nationally Certified Teacher of Music certification - is required to teach 36 weeks in the school year.  Students make up any lessons or practice missed.

The student is committed to a minimum of one 45-minute private lesson per week, and a minimum of 5 hours per week of practice in the specified areas of applied music.

The student’s work is evaluated by the teacher unless the school district makes other arrangements.  A letter grade, or Pass/Fail, or .5 - 2 credits depending on district policy, is filed with the school at the appropriate time.

The teacher competes the Report in Applied Music Study to be returned to the student’s school counselor at the end of the semester or grading period.
