Daniel Ramseier started this petition to Apple

Until 3 years ago it was possible to buy an entry level MacBook Pro Retina for around $1200.- that was at least in some respects expandable:

  • there was a SD-card slot
  • the SSD was upgradable

With that in mind I bought my daughter such a MacBook Pro for her birthday and she was happy.

When eventually the 128GB SSD was nearly full, there was an easy way to expand the storage for little money with a 128GB SD card which allowed to move some data off the built in SSD. There are special SD cards for those MacBooks, that do not stick out of the slot and therefore can be left plugged in all the time.

When eventually the SD card was almost full, and the 512GB SSD of my MacBook was also almost full, I could upgrade to 1TB and reuse my old SSD in my daughter's MacBook and since then we both have plenty of unused space again which will be enough for the next few years.

Such a scenario was possible in the past, but if you check out the 2018 MacBooks (Pro and Air) you will notice that there is no more path into the MacBook universe which offers upgradable storage, which means: If you buy the low end models with 128GB SSD, once the limited space is used up, you will be forced to

  • plug in an external drive (which kills the mobility)
  • use cloud storage (there is usually no connection when you need it the most)
  • buy a new Machine (although Macs have generally a high trade in value, you'll loose time and money)

And most likely this will happen soon after purchase because when you (or your Child) really start to use all the computers possibilities, a lot of data will pile up and none of it will be unimportant enough to get purged. So, the base models are a clear no go and the 256GB SSD option will buy you only a little bit more time.

If you want to buy a machine you can use for around 5 years you'l have to go with the 512GB option which results in a price around $2000.-. This is definitely above the budget of many students (or there parents) and will over time probably cause the mac market share to shrink; this is not just sad but a bad thing for computers in general because the world needs serious competition to Windows PCs to keep the future evolution going.

So please Apple, either:

  • add MacBooks (Pro/Air) with expandable storage and lower the base model's price to $900.- to $1000.- or
  • bring back the old upgradable models (may be with a processor upgrade) and set the base model's price to $900.- to $1000.-

and if possible please make the RAM upgradable too.

I have been developing software for the past 30 years, I have been using notebook computers for the last 20 years and I have switched from Windows to the Mac about 10 years ago because the Macs promised a better computing experience and I have not been disappointed in this respect, I feel that the Macs made my professional and private digital life easier. That's of course just an opinion and not a fact, but I think the more people are getting the opportunity to compare, the better! But Apple's recent price policy will scare off many people from buying a Mac.

To all Mac users, students who would like to buy a Mac and parents who would like to buy their children a Mac: Please support this petition and help to make the MacBooks affordable again.

To all Windows users: Remember that MacBooks are fantastic machines to run Windows on. Please support the petition and help to make the MacBooks affordable again.
