Kara’s Own Voice: Restore functionality to Aida Reminder, an app that provided voice reminders. This can make a world of difference for people with disabilities, wounded warriors with traumatic brain injuries, and persons with dementia.

Apple is a tech company that creates wonderful products and services to improve people's lives. In Apple’s words - “We’ve done everything possible to make anything possible”
We want Apple to restore functionality they removed from a useful app called Aida when they updated the iOS (operating system). The change took Aida from tremendously helpful to barely usable for persons with disabilities, wounded warriors with traumatic brain injuries, and persons with dementia.
We are petitioning the return of two major features on the Aida app:
- Allow the default notification sound to be a person’s own voice
- Allow the application to run in the background and thus be “the voice”.
Why this is important
Kara had a severe traumatic brain injury at age 5. Her challenges with time management and how to move through a day independently are significant. Despite this, with determination and help from technology, Kara is able to live in her own home. The prompts are her own voice telling her what to do.. They go off automatically from the iPad and without any need for Kara to even have to interact with the device. Right now, Kara must continue to use iOS5 on her iPad. Only iOS5 supports the original features of Aida.
The Aida app is a “mainstream” app meaning it was designed to assist anyone. Kara’s mother adapted it to meet Kara’s needs for self-sufficiency with 40-50 voice reminders going off throughout the day for her to follow.
“Aida lets you create reminders very easily and quickly. Recurring reminders are fully supported, and you can set hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reminders, or even days of the week or month. It also has a wake-up alarm with custom snooze time.” –Aida app description from the App Store
The Aida reminder app at $0.99 replaced a specialized $1200.00 software program for people with disabilities. Like Aida, the expensive software allowed Kara to record reminders in her voice to be set to go off throughout the day to keep her organized, safe and self-sufficient. Kara’s mother, researched and tried a multitude of reminder apps. Aida, with its voice reminder system in iOS 5, was the most functional and by far the best. Aida is a 4 ½ star (5 being the highest) app within the Apple App store. Even now, there are over 230 reviews posted about the great features of this app.
Aida Reminder, as used by Kara, had the potential to improve the lives of thousands of people. It changed the lives of Kara and her family. Aida can also help people with disabilities, wounded warriors with traumatic brain injury, and the elderly to successfully navigate through their day.
Before updates to the iOS system, Aida could run in the background so you could use other apps at the same time and still get voice reminders like, “It’s time to feed the dog,” or “Remember to take your medication.” This was very beneficial because often times, you’re using another app when Aida needs to remind you to do something.
However, ongoing iOS changes, now up to iOS 8, have resulted in the app no longer being able to run in the background and provide a “voice reminder” while other apps are open. Instead, the user will hear an Apple notification sound, and then must open the Aida app to hear the voice reminder. This is too difficult for many individuals, like Kara.
Despite Kara’s family’s pleas, Apple will only allow its notification sounds to be the initial sound heard, rather than a person’s own voice. The Aida developer whom they have communicated with many times, and who shares their frustration, says the initial function can be restored. It just requires him to “flip a switch” to reactivate that capability. However, Apple’s iOS updates prevent him from making that happen. It’s wonderful that an iPad, and two apps (Pictello) costing a total of $19.98, provide the keys to an independent life for Kara, and can offer the same opportunity to so many others. Help us get this function back, so others can have a more independent life.
Remind Apple - as they advertise “Possibility is built right in” Help us to get that possibility back for those with memory and cognitive challenges.
