Allow discreet help device, the eButton to remotely initiate SMS help messages on iPhones.

The issue

The eButton is beneficial in lots of situations – when you feel unsafe walking to your car, when you’re worried about your teenager going to parties or travelling, when you’re concerned for your elderly parents living alone, concerned about your pregnant partner, or even to get out of awkward dates! Anywhere it is intimidating, threatening, embarrassing or impractical to handle your phone.

With Android phones you can be up to 20 metres from your phone and one click of the eButton can still activate the eButtonApp on your phone, sending help request SMSs to any number of selected contacts. There is no need to handle the phone and location updates are sent if you move.

The eButton is small, weighs 11 grams, and can be worn/carried and operated discreetly.

Currently the eButton only works to its full potential on Android Bluetooth Smart Ready phones running Android 4.3 or later.

While the Low Energy Bluetooth technology needed to activate the eButtonApp on an iPhone is already available, Apple currently requires users to tap “send” for each and every SMS. This defeats the purpose of the discreet nature of the eButton.

We need Apple to get on board to change the iPhone’s functionality to allow the eButton to act as a proxy “send” button on the iPhone. This change will benefit the safety of people across the country and ensure no one misses out on personal safety because of which phone they possess.

The eButton was invented by Coffs Harbour developer Ian Kinny and is a world first in utilising Low Energy Bluetooth technology to initiate a smart phone help app. People who need the eButton include.

- A male or female walking to their car, walking home, or using public transport.

- A teenager at a party needing to be collected by their mum or dad, but does not want to call them for risk of being ridiculed.

- Deaf people who cannot access voice based safety devices.

- A person travelling in Australia or overseas with parents or family wanting peace of mind that should they get into trouble, help can be alerted immediately.

- A person wanting an exit strategy from an awkward business or social occasion such as a long meeting or first date.

- Community welfare workers or doctors who may be confronted by clients or patients they meet or treat.

- Shop assistants working alone, for example, at 24-hour convenient stores or fast food restaurants.

- Tradesmen who may work alone from time to time.

- Pizza delivery drivers making deliveries in isolated locations or late at night.

- An elderly person living independently.
