The community of blind and low vision individuals who use Persian as their predominant language are deprived of accessing Apple products fully and sufficiently because Apple has not added Farsi to its screen reader known as VoiceOver. In other words, a Persian speaker who is blind or visually impaired, cannot use iPad, iPhone and/or Apple computers in Persian, because this language is not supported by those devices. While Nuance Communications Corporation, the provider of speech recognition and text-to-speech for Apple services, supports Persian along with many other languages, Apple, unfortunately, has not taken any actions to enable Persian -the language of over 110 million individuals worldwide- on its devices screen readers. Therefore, Apple has discriminated against its blind and low vision users whose predominant language is Persian.

Excluding a number of people with disabilities from using new technologies is against the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (1992) and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 in the USA, -the cradle of Apple services- which emphasize identifying and eliminating barriers to accessibility to information, communications and electronic services.

As disability rights activists and supporters all around the world, we request Apple to enable Persian in its devices’ VoiceOver and terminate discriminating against a remarkable number of blind and low vision users of Apple devices.

در حالی‌که هزاران نفر از کاربران محصولات اپل، افراد فارسی زبان نابینا یا کم‌بینا هستند، متاسفانه این افراد امکان استفادۀ کامل و بهینه از محصولات این شرکت را ندارند زیرا اپل هنوز زبان فارسی را به مجموعه زبانهای صفحه‌خوان خود موسوم به «وویس اُور» اضافه نکرده است. به عبارت دیگر، یک کاربر نابینا یا کم بینا نمی‌تواند از محصولات اپل مانند آی‌پد، آیفون یا رایانه‌های این شرکت به زبان فارسی استفاده کند چون در این وسایل، امکان فعال کردن «وویس اُور فارسی» وجود ندارد و دستگاه نمی‌تواند با زبان فارسی، با کاربرانِ نابینا و کم‌بینا ارتباط صوتی برقرار کند.

شایان ذکر است هم‌اکنون "نووانس" -- توسعه‌دهنده موتور صوتی مورد استفاده در محصولات اپل، از زبان فارسی نیز همانند سایر زبا‌ن‌ها پشتیبانی می‌کند، اما با وجود جمعیت ۱۱۰ میلیونی فارسی زبان‌ها، اپل هنوز برای گنجاندن صدای زبان فارسی در محصولات خود اقدامی را در دستور کار قرار  نداده است و فارسی، در میان زبانهایی که این شرکت از آنها پشتیبانی کرده جایگاهی ندارد.

این درحالی است که بر اساس قوانین بین‌المللی حمایت از حقوق افراد دارای معلولیت و به خصوص قانون ADA که قانون حمایتی افراد معلول در کشور امریکا، مهد اینترنت و محصولات اپل است، تمامی امکانات عمومی باید برای همه افراد، فارغ از نوع معلولیت‌شان قابل دسترسی باشد.

ما جمعی از حامیان حقوق افراد دارای معلولیت در سراسر جهان از شرکت اپل تقاضا داریم که با اضافه کردن زبان فارسی به مجموعه زبان‌های صفحه‌خوان وویس‌اُور روی محصولات این شرکت، از جمله آیفون، به اِعمالِ تبعیض نسبت به افراد نابینا و کم بینای فارسی زبان پایان دهد.
