Hi MacBook users,
If you read one and only one story about this problem, read this:
https://www.businessinsider.de/apple-macbook-pro-butterfly-keyboard-unreliable-review-2018-5?r=US&IR=T
Breaking news: a second lawsuit has been filed:
http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2018/05/apple-hit-with-a-five-count-class-action-for-the-macbook-pros-defective-keyboard-the-second-lawsuit-on-this-issue-this-mo.html
The law firm involved:

A great video I just found:

A new video from Rene Ritchie:

My assumption is it'll take many months to reach an outcome, given that Apple still hasn't responded to this petition, and lawsuits take a long time to reach any conclusion.
(TEMPORARY) SOLUTION
In the meantime, I'm breaking up with my 2016 MacBook Pro with butterfly keyboard. I just bought a used 2015 13" MacBook Pro with the old, reliable keyboard.
Here are Casey Johnston and Marco Arment's stories about preferring the previous generation MBPs:

REAL SOLUTIONS
To reiterate what the petition stated, the ONLY solution is a new, REDESIGNED, DIFFERENT keyboard that will work reliably. I'm worried that Apple may try to sweep this problem under the rug with an extended warranty program. An extended warranty program is NOT a solution because we already know from numerous comments/posts that the replacement keyboards of the existing design have failed again, and in some cases users have been through three consecutive failed keyboards.
If Apple is unable to develop a redesigned keyboard that will fit into the tolerances/space constraints of the existing MacBooks, Apple should either:
A) provide a full refund to everyone who purchased these machines regardless of when the machines were purchased, or
B) Alternatively, Apple could offer to replace these laptops completely with whatever their next-generation laptop is with a redesigned keyboards.
I realize those two options are very expensive for Apple, and yet it's the right thing to do. These laptops are lemons.
An additional problem we users face is that the resale value of these machines is effectively zero, because who would want to buy a used laptop with a keyboard that could fail at any time? We Apple users count on resale value when we upgrade to new machines and sell our old ones. I've done exactly that many times. Usually, after 2-3 years of use, we can count on solid residual value for resale on the used market. There's no residual value in a laptop with a keyboard that can die at any moment.
Lastly, Apple should strongly consider discontinuing sale of all MacBook Pros and MacBooks worldwide, and wait until they have a new keyboard design to start selling again. Sure, that would put a huge dent in near term sales/profits, but it's the right thing for Apple to do for its customers and would be a long term investment in restoring the value of Apple's MacBook brand. At the least, Apple should be upfront and tell its current MacBook customers about the problem, and promise to provide redesigned keyboards to new customers if the keyboards fail (which, many will, predictably).
The fact that Apple is selling these computers in its stores and not telling its customers that the keyboards have a demonstrated track record of failure is not a good look for a company that's supposed to be dedicated to "insanely great" quality and customer experiences.
For the Mac,
Matthew
