Hollywood, Please Take the DRM Out of iTunes Videos
The Issue
iTunes is a very convenient way for Mac, Windows, and iOS users to legally purchase and download music, videos, apps, and books. However, the problem with iTunes is that videos purchased from there are encrypted with DRM, making them unusable on platforms other than the three listed above. If you're on Android or Linux, you can't play any of the videos which you have legally obtained from iTunes. Also, this DRM would make viewing of these videos impossible in the highly unlikely event that Apple either went bankrupt or shutdown the iTunes Store. DRM-laden videos are very impractical if you're not going to stay in the Apple ecosystem. When you get down to it, DRM is a very anti-competitive instrument when applied to digital content such as videos and books - because it limits your viewing of that content to devices made by the company which sold the videos. It would be greatly appreciated if Apple stopped selling DRM-laden videos and made it possible to download them (DRM-free) through a web portal, because this would make it possible to use videos purchased on the iTunes store on operating systems other than MacOS, Windows, and iOS.
