Democratic Leaders: Stop Bringing Pillows to a Knife Fight

Whereas we believe that the recent election was free, but not fair. Donald Trump’s Christian-Nationalist MAGA ideology is based on an alternate reality that does not exist. By stoking fear, hatred, and violence, they have convinced millions of Americans to reject science, reason, democracy, and truth, all in service to an agenda based on racism, bigotry, misogyny, and homophobia. They have created a cult disguised as a political movement.

Whereas we believe that most Trump voters are unwitting victims of this corrosive ideology. After years of indoctrination, most Trump voters have been manipulated into believing a pollical doctrine that does not serve their interests, and in fact puts all Americans at great peril, regardless of party. 

Whereas we believe that for a free and fair democratic system to function, all parties must agree on fundamental rules. When one party refuses to commit to the basic tenets of democracy— the rule of law, free press, civil rights, and voting rights, the system cannot function or survive.

Whereas beginning on January 20, 2025, the Trump-Musk MAGA movement is trying to end representative democracy, to dismantle the rule of law, to ban the free press, to muzzle free speech, to jail citizens who dare to disagree with them, and to interdict the civil rights of American citizens who they deem to be enemies. This is not conjecture; they are following a 920-page plan outlining all of this. 

Whereas we know that the Trump-Musk MAGA movement has infiltrated all sectors of government, and now this cabal of wealthy, powerful, privileged lunatics holds all the pieces of power, including full control of all branches of the military. 

Whereas we believe that some threats to democracy’s survival are so severe that extreme means must be used to protect it. Adhering to democratic principles against an opponent who ignores them is not a fair fight. 

Therefore, We the People, millions of law-abiding Americans, implore all Democratic (and Republican) leaders who believe in the sanctity of representative governance to fight against the fascists with every political weapon available. There are no longer any guard rails protecting democracy. The insurrection is complete. No more compromise. Use all the instruments of government that remain to obstruct, block, thwart, and fuck up anything that Republicans try to do. Fight for We the People, god dammit!

Got up this morning. Made coffee. Ate cereal. Headed off to work. Chatted with colleagues. Answered emails. Ate lunch. Ran an errand. Had some phone calls, more emails, did some research, wrote a memo, did a review. Couple meetings. Headed home at the end of the day. Just another regular day...

Except it's not. The fucking world is blowing up, we the people are losing our freedoms by the bushels each day. Those fuckers are chipping away every day--18 Inspectors Generals are fired (what the fuck is an inspector general?  -- oh shit, they are fucking important!); Trump signs an executive order to halt government grant funding (well, that can't be so bad, right, I mean how many grants are there? (-- oh my fucking god, billions of dollars of money that funds thousands of programs???!!! What the god damn fuck?); ending DEIA programs (because, you know, everybody equal now as long as you white).

Jesus fucking Christ, it is difficult to keep up with this firehose of bullshit coming from the fascists. And they know that. And that is what is so scary. For many of us, the world does not appear different. We go about our day like normal. Everything seems fine. 

Until it's not. Until the bullshit gets to each of us. Federal employees are taking the brunt of the shit right now. (the number of friends we know in government who have told us their job is in jeopardy is double digits) And Spanish speaking people are under direct threat. Round ups.

The mainstream media is failing us. And Democrats in office are mostly a bunch of weak, cowardly assholes. Here's our fucking Democratic minority leader:

Good to know, Hakeem, good to know.  Now we feel a lot better knowing that god has his ass on that throne. Whew! Now we can check that off our list of concerns.

So here we go. Let’s actually hold our Democratic representatives accountable. As of this afternoon, enough outcry has caused Trump to rescind his spending freeze on federal loans and grants. Yay We the People! But don't for a minute think this is over. That was just their first move. 

So, here's a suggestion. If you haven't already, hook yourself up with Resistbot. Text RESIST to 50409. You will then walk through a few set-up questions, and then you are set. Resistbot will help you set up direct access to various government officials. And help you craft a statement to them. 

This is part of democracy in action: the ability to communicate with the people who represent us. Can they do that in Russia, or Hungary, or North Korea? Uh, no. People have no formal representation under authoritarian regimes. So, we encourage all to take the opportunity to tell our leaders what you think. If the MAGA-Trump-Musk administration gets its way, that will no longer be a choice.
