The Issue
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important festivals celebrated by millions of people around the world, particularly in Hindu, Jain, and Sikh communities. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Many families in Wayne, NJ, also celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and joy. However, students and families who observe Diwali often face the challenge of balancing school commitments with the religious and cultural activities associated with this significant day.
The absence of a school holiday for Diwali in Wayne, NJ, impacts the ability of students to fully participate and enjoy the festivities with their families. Celebrating Diwali holds immense cultural importance and educational value, promoting understanding and appreciation of diverse traditions among students. Recognizing Diwali as a school holiday would not only honor the cultural diversity within our community but also align with the inclusive values we strive to promote in our education system.
Granting a school holiday for Diwali is feasible and has precedent. Many school districts in the United States, including multiple school districts in New Jersey and New York City, have already made Diwali an official school holiday in recognition of their diverse student populations. In fact, over 20 districts in New Jersey have added Diwali to their school calendars, allowing families to celebrate without worrying about students missing school. This change has been met with overwhelming support and has enriched the students’ cultural experiences.
We therefore respectfully request that the Wayne Board of Education take immediate action to create Diwali as a holiday on the school calendar, starting with the upcoming academic year. By doing so, it will set a precedent of inclusivity and respect for cultural diversity within our educational framework.
Sign this petition to support a more inclusive and understanding community by advocating for Diwali to be recognized as a school holiday in Wayne, NJ. Your signature can make a significant difference in promoting cultural awareness and inclusivity in our schools.
